The Kit List

Glassing the coast from the hill, boots and waterproofs in shot

This isn't a strict list, it's what earns its place in a pack on the hill. We've carried all of it ourselves, and a brand only makes the cut because we rate it, not because it paid for the spot.

Pack light. You're carrying this yourself across steep, uneven ground all day. Favour versatile, multi-use kit over a separate item for every scenario, and bring only what you'll actually use.

Needed Whatever The Season

The Essentials

Genuinely universal, regardless of when you come. What changes with the seasons is below, not here.

It Depends When You Come

Seasonal Additions

Earlier in the year, midges matter more than cold. Later on, the midges are gone but the weather turns harder. Add accordingly.

May To September

  • Midge repellent — we swear by Smidge
  • Midge head net, non-negotiable on a still evening
  • Lightweight, breathable base layers
  • A brimmed hat and sunscreen
  • Lighter gloves for starts that warm up fast
  • A lightweight Buff, for sun and midges

October To April

  • An insulated jacket for long waits glassing the hill — Swazi is built for exactly this
  • Heavyweight thermal base layers
  • A warm mid-layer or fleece
  • Insulated, waterproof gloves — Hunters Element is a reliable pick
  • A warm hat that covers your ears
  • A warm buff or neck gaiter
  • Thermal socks
Worth The Extra Weight

Nice To Haves

Pick a few of these, not all of them, that's too much. Just what matters most to you.
